Life without sugar. Day 3 to 8.

Here I am, 8 days long without sugar. I cannot say that I have strictly follow life without sugar, because there is so many foods that contain sugar that sometimes is just impossible to look at every single thing. But we are becoming more conscious of the sugar in the food, and I can say I notice almost immediately when something has sugar on it. I am becoming more sensitive to sweetness, I actually do not need it that much I think.. But the truth is, I’ve been compensating sugar with a lot of other food.. and that is not ideal.. but well, I am starting, so the point is not to be that 100% strict with yourself, but being really aware of what you are eating.. and that for sure we are doing! Tuli went shopping the other day and he spent twice or more trying to find food without sugar. It is amazing how sugar is really everywhere.  I understand now better the discussion that was going on recently in Colombia about more taxes to soft drinks.

Today will be the big day to proof my persistence. I am going to the baby shower of one of my best friends (if not the best, I must confess) and I will have to say no to a lot of French delicatessen.. oh.. I will really need to be strong!!! We will see. For now, I just could not avoid weighting myself today, one week later, and it is because I need some incentive, and I got it. I think I have lost at least 500 grams… Is not a lot, but it is something taking into account that I have not exercised, and that I have been eating plenty potatoes, rice and pasta… I know.. Shame on me!!! But the challenge was only sugar not carbohydrates (I know what carbohydrates do once in the body and blood, but let’s keep it simple this month).

Lesson learnt: Eating without sugar makes you aware of what you are giving your body to make you happy.

My first time to Asia, my first time to Cambodia

More than 16 hours after I said goodbye to “my little every things” and to my beloved Tuli, I was touching Asian soil. It looked far, but the true is that I have never been in a foreign country more similar than mine before.  I came here as a Dutch citizen, but who am I kidding? I’m 100% Colombian and 150% proud of being Colombian.

We started our journey in the Asian continent with the most beautiful sunset in less than 30 minutes, we stepped over in Honk Kong the time enough to learn that all airports look the same and are the same ridicules expensive for basic drinks as water.

Our Cambodian experience is full with ginger thee, long working days, manful discussions, and delicious food.  We were assigned to facilitate training for the staff in Cambodia, but also for some colleagues from Vietnam and Afghanistan, so the group was really international, as my colleague is real Dutch. This is what I enjoy more of my work, the international environment.

Being surrounded by Cambodian people didn’t feel strange at all, to the contrary, I have never felt so close to my roots in a different country than my own of course. When I was facilitating the training I felt like being at my home town. People here look so much alike to us, that this has given me great confidence. The training went good enough to satisfy us and the participants, so we score high and we are very happy about it. It was not perfect of course, but “Perfect is good, good is beter!”

We live and enjoy new things. The tuk tuk ride every morning and evening was a tour through the city center and through the cultures, their lives, their challenges. I did not see a single bus, but I did see thousands of motors, hundred bicycles and many “many” Lexus and Toyota’s.  Being my first time in Asia I had to endure the hectic traffic, the pollution, I had to witness a full family in one motor, the kids without protection, babies in the arms of the mother behind daddies in the motors,  old woman and men riding bicycles, people in sleepers and T-shirts under heavy rain. Thanks good the plastic was invented! It is a whole life on the motor, and it is a way of living and surviving. If you want to get somewhere, you really need to have the Dutch cyclist Philosophy: You can go anywhere on your bike, in this case, on your motor. I saw some traffic lights, but they look more like decoration than with a real purpose. Traffic in Colombia is also horrible, but this is above all my experiences. We were told today how easily one can spend one hour per kilometer in times of heavy rain, just stocked in the traffic. But what was really familiar to me was how in cases of traffic stocks, then someone would take the lead to organize the best the alternative routes.

We had our private Tuk Tuk driver, his name is Pom. I don’t remember ever seen a driver so smiling and so willing to do his job. He was amazing on his motor, he would fit where no other Tuk Tuk was and he would take care to avoid the more holes on the streets as possible.

Last day on our way to the office we saw a big tent in the middle of the street, and a big celebration going on. Then we learnt that the weddings feasts are celebrated that way. I read in a book that the Cambodians say that a wedding is the union of two paths, that’s why they have to block one. J

In general, my experience was great, I had a great companion during the trip, during the training and during our free time. We could enjoy visiting the Royal Palace when the sun was not burning your head yet (I’ve never felt so heated by the sun anywhere in the world!!), and we learnt how the two main Asian religions live together in Cambodia, Hinduism and Buddhism  mixed together in the traditions, in the architecture, in the art, in the way people dress.. I learnt the story of Rashana, and even had time to watch one of the movies about it.

I cannot find something negative about the trip, not even the eye infection that I had the first 5 days or the coughing that I had the other 5 days of the trip. I used those experiences to learn that I have to be more careful when touching my eyes in long flights, and also to do not use air conditioning at night and use a kind of mask when riding a tuk tuk one hour a day for almost 10 days. So, even that was something positive as well.

I hope that my next time in Asia and/ or in Cambodia I can take my family so they can also enjoy the beauty of the country, the food  (including frog)and most of all, the people.

Thank you OXFAM for this amazing opportunity!

New year resolutions: I quit sugar! For a month.

One of my New Year resolutions is to quit sugar. The reason is simple: Health. Is not that I am sick, but I want to prevent being sick, and I also want to embark myself and my family into a more healthy life style. I’ve been reading and listening about different sugar-free experiences and all that I get is just wonderful changes in the daily life, despite the hard of the beginng.. But which start is easy?

My mom has reduced her sugar consumption for years already, and the changes are more than visible, in the positive way, so as a good daughter, I am also starting this one month experiment. This is also in meory of a good man, husband and father who recently passed away and to his wife, whom I admire a lot. And finally, I also want to support, even from the distance, my friend Gaby and her husband Piet, in their new challenge.
I have been able to convince Tuli to live this with me; I honestly won’t be able to do it without him supporting me as he always does.  So here we are, at the second day of our one month sugar free:

Day 1: Sunday, 1st of January. It went really easy, we do not eat that much sugar any way and if we don’t buy cookies or sugar, then we really don’t miss it (That much), so we had our usual breakfast for Sunday which is Pannekoeken, without sugar, but again, that is usual, we accompanied them with banana and cheese. Easy –peasy. For lunch we had a tosti with ham and cheese, as we were in a children indoor playhouse and the options were very limited.  That was the healthiest that one could get. For dinner we made a delicious salad with lentils, broccoli and apple, served with andivi stampot (A 100% Dutch plate), and white yogurt as dessert. This was not difficult at all, as it was our usual way of eating… the difficult came at night with the tea before going to bed, we usually have a cookie or four, and yesterday we just had tea. A bit sad, but with the support of Tuli, we made it!!
Day 2: Monday 2nd of January: I woke up full of hopes that I had already lost some weight, but I knew I was being too much optimistic, so I didn’t bother to weight. I won’t do it till the end of the month, just to avoid frustrations.  The main reasons of not eating sugar is not losing weight… but my jeans know very well that some kilos less would benefit us both. For breakfast I had to improvise as my initial plan was oats but the one that I had thought contained sugar, so luckily I found one with no sugar… With this experiment I am becoming more aware of all the food that has already sugar on it… and it is a lot!!! I mean, even oats? Well, anyway, I grab some  snacks for work, which were seeds, and fruit.. Thanks God one of my colleagues is allergic to sugar and she shared a date with me because I was starving in the afternoon. For lunch I had  a salad, but the quality of the salads at my work are not the best, and somehow my stomach was pretty aware of it. But I survived! On my way home, I went to the biological supermarket and spent 30EUR in healthy food. If I would have bought the same food in my usual super market, I am sure I would have paid at least the half of it… Eating healthy is expensive… that is my second conclusion of this experiment so far.

And the third conclusion (wow, I am only in day two and I had already 3 conclusions.. If I am not getting thinner, I am getting wiser, that for sure, hihi)  is that eating sugar free with kids is really an utopia. Or maybe I am just in the automatic way and then I have to change it, but puff… it is really difficult. Today, my son baked some cookies in the BSO (daycare) and he was eating it in the way home, and I just wanted to share with him the joy so I asked him for a piece which he unexpectedly quick agree to give me, and then when I realized it, it was already in my mouth.. My tongue is already more sensitive and I could feel the loads of sugar on my mouth, so I had to take it out. It was difficult then to explain to my 4 year old son why I did it if that is the most delicious thing for him… But he and my daughter are also the reason of why I am doing this, I want to teach them a healthy way to eat, and to taste the pure flavor of natural food, the real stuff!!!!
For dinner we had a delicious pasta (integral) with spinach and fish. They loved it, and we too. So, second day was also a success. I am happy that the 5 dates I have eaten the last half hour do not count as sugar in my experimentJ

Thanks Marjan for the good tips today, and be aware that I will be asking you for advice the coming weeks.

Yes, I can!

When you are a mother the little small tiny things make you happy, but what I just achieved is just exhilarating. I feel like Obama when he won the first time or like our dear Quintana when he crossed the final in the tour de FranceJ. This is an amazing feeling.  You would be thinking: What is it so big? Tell at once, and then I would be afraid to reveal the reason of my unexpected happiness and freedom. But, of course, I will: Both of my kids are taking a nap, yes they are sleeping at midday, they didn’t even cry to get to sleep or fight or made all the show they use to do when I tell them is time to go to bed for the midday break. No, they didn’t!!! They just laid down and closed their eyes, and then I run to turn on my computer and write, and also warm up my cold unfinished coffee from this morning at 6 a.m. My first thought after this sudden victory was to lay down as well and get some sleep, the bags under my eyes will appreciate it, but then  I went for a different option: I need to get my energy from something else than just bare stillness, and writing gives me this breath and strength. I felt a bit guilty for not using this time to clean, to do the laundry or to cook dinner, that is really needed here, but again, I need to put my neurons working in something different than just planning the best strategy to make your kids sleep “tear-free” or take the diaper away without traumatizing.

Well, here I am just writing about them, and that is what happens when you are parent, you yearn for some free time, and as soon as you get it, you just spend it all, every single second thinking on your children and just wishing to see them soon again.  My glory does not last long, as the beautiful baby girls is already awake and asking my attention, so this is it for now, but what I really want to point out, before the wind takes it away, is that persistency, discipline and routine are the key of education. It took me time to get results, could be it or could be a mere stroke of luck, whatever it is I am just going to enjoy it all the same.

Reloaded

I just can’t believe it’s been almost three years since I published my last blog. People always say that time flies, but when you actually realize it, you seem to be catch in a non-stoppable river stream. Luckily, publishing does not mean not writing. I’ve being busy writing my diary, that was duplicated when my son was born, and now it has another series for my new baby girl (not that new anymore). What to write about after all these years? In which language should I write? Too difficult questions for this introductory post, this few lines are only to announce (to myself), that I intent to write AND publish again, that I want to share my experiences with my friends and with the people who are in the same circumstances or similar than mine. I think it is great to know that we are not alone, that some where someone is struggling with similar problems and at the same time, enjoying the process to find the best solution to them. So, with no more preamble, let the writing start!!!

Ready

It’s almost impossible saying that you are ready to face a situation in life, and hardly credible to say that you are ready for the birth of your son. However, I want to believe I am ready. And I’m waiting. Perhaps the real true is that I’m completely exhausted of the whole waiting, specially the last weeks at home, which were wonderful the first 20 days, but now they seem endless without a single signal that the birth will commence…

I could consider myself now an expert on birth theory, I know how to identify the beginning of it, I know the techniques to minimize the pain, I know which positions might help, when a shower or bath could also help, how the massages should be done, how works the connection between your chin and the pelvic area, and how to relax all different parts of my body through breathing, visualization and affirmations.

All these sound the perfect preparation, but I have the feeling this can come to nothing in the real practice, I really hope not, but I must be honest to myself, I’ve being feeling some cramps that I was expecting were contractions, or at least the Braxton Hicks ones (the fake ones), but I think they were more in my mind than in my body, or perhaps they were just backache due to my impossibility to find a position to sit or sleep still.

Arjan talks to the baby all the time and tries to convince him how wonderful the world is out there, but my little does not know better than my tummy, where even not so much space now, he gets all the food he needs and all the attention when he starts practicing to become the next kung fu world champion… He still getting all his daily massages and all the music he is now used to hear, so, what else could he hope for (love, food, attention, music), how to trade all this for the birth where he will have to pass through a narrow canal, and feel like an earthquake is shaking him and all his tiny bones and muscles… oh boy, I will be thinking it twice as well…

I’m still on time, we are just so anxious because we thought we could influence him so much that he would come last Sunday, it was our first big disappointment, but in real, we still have 9 more days, the bets have began, my boss says is the 14th… my mother expects the 12th or the 17th. I’m just going to be smarter this time and I’m going to listen to my baby more carefully to know when he decides he is ready to come to this world, that although not the best, it will provide him with all the love and care his parents and family can give him.

The journey throughout my pregnancy

How to start? When to begin? My pregnancy just didn’t start from the conception, but before and well after… It’s being a whole process that I can’t really tell where the beginning was but hopefully I will be able to tell when the end would be  We were talking about having children for years, but it was more a game than anything else, but as you know if you play with fire you can get burn… and it happened. We had really no idea that we will be trapped in our own game, and when we found it up, we were in shock for at least one or two weeks. I was never sure whether I wanted or not to have children but if I would, there was no doubt at all that I wanted Arjan, my husband to be the father of them. I am so grateful life has given me such a partner for life!!! Pregnancy can be divided in quarters, although it’s a lie that it last 9 months or 40 weeks, the official way to count the weeks of your pregnancy begins the first day of your last menstruation period, what a fake!! You are then not even thinking in getting pregnant! But well, this is the medical way to count it, so we have to follow the flow…. Once realized we were pregnant, after three different tests because we did not believe it, I started to feel tired, I did not have any other symptoms happily, not any dizziness or any cravings, just exhausted, I remember coming home from work and lying down to bed till Arjan woke me up with dinner, I had energy enough to eat and then go back to sleep, I can’t really say those were tough months, but I had no life at all, it was just working, sleeping and eating. Luckily, the fourth month came quickly after and I recovered my energy, it was amazing how I could really experience all that books were telling about pregnancy in the different stages, my breast and belly start itching and the routine of almond oil at night and anti stretch marks cream every morning begun. Such a nice treat, especially at night when my husband does it. During the second quarter I was able to received happily friends and family, walk with them, go to new places, feel full of energy and watch my belly growing with loads of expectations. Working was nice, my belly allowed me to do things as usual; clothes were fine, life was a bit normal again. The only stumble, literally, that I had these months was a sprained ankle...twice!! One in my second month, the second in my fifth month! Next to the pain, it was awful seeing your swollen ankle and not being able to move and have the constant fair to fall again. I also had the cold, it was not nice, but after one long week I could also recovered, it was important to have the support of my family and colleagues at work! I could travel to Colombia to see my family, or I should say, so they could see me. It was a wonderful and relaxing time, but also the beginning of my last quarter, meaning the end of a sleeping era. Sleep at night has become a nightmare since then, getting only worse and worse every day, every pound… I am now 35 weeks pregnant, and have gained 12 kilos, my belly is 110 centimeters round, and laying down is only possible on my left side, my back won’t resist the weight and if I lay on my right side, my whole body gets sleepy in 5 minutes and I feel the lack of oxygen, what a journey!! Well, everything is not that bad at all, I’m resting at home already two weeks and I’m getting ready to receive this little –not literally- baby into this world. We were part of a mindful birth course that has given us handy tools to enjoy the birth of our son in a relax and positive manner. I will write about this course in other note, for now, I’m trying to build a routine of walking and reading, the second one goes perfect, the first one is the difficult one with the Dutch weather though…

Tres libros, tres historias

Walking on the ice!

Today I witnessed how Dutch people live a real winter: Skating on the canals!! Wow, I have to say it is a wonderful spectacle: See all kind of people skating, walking, playing and even cycling on the icy surface of the canals. Youngsters and old people seemed normal, but then I saw little kids not older than 4 years skating like they were walking, the first thing I wondered was how could they skate so natural, and after leaving my astonishment, I got even more surprised with the parents – if there were any to see -. if the little kid would fall – It happened rarely – the father or mother wouldn't stop to help him or her, perhaps would wait a bit further but in no way would give any extra attention to the child. Under those circumstances, the toddler would only stand up and continue skating. That would explain the naturalness of Dutchies on the ice and water, and also what I saw afterwards: People cycling on the canals, grandma with grand child walking and playing sliding like in a sand playground, people walking their dogs out and even little shops on the icy: Yes, they were selling drinks on the canals! They had their table, their show-board with the specialties (coffee, chocolate-milk and soup), but that was only the beginning... We went out on a normal Saturday to buy some things, among them, a top-mattress :). Well, my handsome husband had to proof himself his Dutch-nature and, lacking skatings, he was cycling on the canals, carrying the top-mattress, and holding my hand while I was walking also on the canal in front of our house. Downtown the canals were even crowder, and we could even see an old man walking with his shopper-walker, then it was not weird any more to see people shopping on their skates.. Cafe's on the shops were the rule and walking on the ice-water became normal. It was a complete life on the ice. Arjan told me that this was real Holland, his parents have skate all winters in the polders to be found every where in this country, or when it gets really cold, in the canals itself. Now I've seen, and certainly enjoyed, another way of this my beautiful host country. To honor my love to my host city, I finish saying that Leiden represents perfectly all what Netherlands means! Happy to be here in spite of the cold!!

Leiden - my home city in The Netherlands

Last Thursday evening I was having drinks with my colleagues and I was telling them about the most popular upcoming feast in Leiden: “Leiden ontzet”. Then I started talking a bit about this beautiful city where I’ve lived the past two years, and I realized, once more, how happy I am to live in a city with so much history and idiosyncrasy. In my blog of today I’m going to write about this city full with history and… water.
Leiden is the second city in the Netherlands with more canals, obviously the first one is Amsterdam, but I think it has to do with the size of the cities, in any case, Leiden canals are much cleaner and nicest to navigate. Leiden is home of the oldest university in the Netherland and has the oldest still operating astronomic observatory in the world. Leiden was home of Rembrant, one of the greatest painters in Europe, throughout the classrooms of Leiden University notorious thinkers and Scientifics found a place to develop and teach their knowledge, Einstein was one of them (today one of the most famous bars here is named after him). Is not for nothing that the Royal family study in this University.
It was from Leiden were the pilgrim fathers found refugee from the English persecution before sailing to America, where they will found a city called New Amsterdam, today, New York. In the XVII century was Leiden the bravest city to resist the Spanish siege, it was then when Wiliam van Orange, father of Holland, broke the dykes, letting flood the city and making the Spanish run away. William brought herring (the Dutch most precious typical fish) and white bread. The Spanish left behind some food, and from the leftovers, the hutspot was born. (Smash potatoes, carrots and onion). Nowadays this is a meal given to all dwellers of Leiden, as well to all people born here. It’s an amazing and huge feast of three days, but I’ll write more about it, hopefully, another day.
I’m happy to live in this convenient – located city, only 15 minutes away from the airport and no more than 30 minutes away from any important city in the Randstad, 15 min to the Hague, 15 min. to Harlem, and 30. min. to Amstedam and Utrecht. We have here everything that one can find in Amsterdam, but in a better and relaxing atmosphere.
We moved not too long ago to a new house, in front of a canal our own strawberry, parsley and mint garden. This is Leiden, this is my home-city in the Netherlands!

The fall of giants

I just want to tell the world I finish and amazing book: The fall of giants, by Ken Follet, yes, the same of The Pillars of the Earth, this book that many of us cried with. Well, I must admit with this one that I struggled not to cry more than once, this one even more, because it is based on real facts. Follet has an amazing ability to get you into the book and the characters, to present the story in a way that you almost feel you are the one who is living it. Arjan began with it today, I’ m sure he’ll finish it as quick as I did, it is without doubts one of the best one I’ve ever read.

Macedonia experience

I was eager to visit Macedonia ever since I read the book Alexander, written by Valerio Massimo, not to mention my mother is also fond of him and this beautiful land. That’s why when I was told I was being invited to the annual meeting of SPARK to be hold on Ohrid, Macedonia, I got so excited – that I could not hide it – and I even organized some few days before the meeting to go with Arjan to enjoy together of this promising land of lakes, mountains, abundant and delicious food, and kind people. Our dream begun last Friday evening when we flew to Zurich – there is no direct flight to Macedonia at an affordable price -. We spent the night there and took the plane to Skopje early in Saturday. We were landing at Skopje at 9. There was still a sweet and nice dream. But then, suddenly, I was awoken up by the border officer telling me that I was not allowed to enter their territory because I didn’t have a Schengen visa, and my long residence permit for the EU was not enough. For the first time in my life I was rejected at a border, it was like dropping from my happy European cloud to the cold reality of my Colombian nationality.
I am a Colombian citizen and I’m proud of it, I’m happy to be born in the beautiful land of two oceans and three set of the biggest mountains in earth. But undeniably, the European citizenship gives loads of privileges. I could not believe I was witnessing my own devolution in the same plane that took me there while the officer was telling to my husband he could enter and stay. Do not they understand the meaning of family? Do they don’t get the idea of traveling together and be together in the prosperity and adversity? It was like being the main character of a movie, a sad one. An illogical one.
A national of a third country with a Schengen visa for three months can enter Macedonia, but someone with a long residence permit card cannot. I’ve never heard such absurd regulation.
Letting aside the whole waiting, traveling and realization that I was indeed sent back to Amsterdam, it was a holistic experience. Not only because I realized once more the limitless love and support of my husband, but also because I could feel and almost touch the bond that I have with my colleagues at SPARK. They fully supported me and even offer me the hope to make it still working. We tried, but then I soon realized I was not ready to embark in another long and stressful visa process application. As a Colombian national and a travel-lover, visas are a permanent part of my daily life, that’s why I felt so frustrated I didn’t even think about it when I was happily planning my trip to Macedonia. In my defense, I had strong reasons to believe it was not necessary, and also because following common sense and a systematic interpretation of the rules I actually didn’t need it. I’m convinced of that.
I’m sorry because I’ll miss to see all my colleagues, to miss the landscape that for now I’m only allowed to see in google images, and also because I’ll miss to see a good friend there. Arjan will not enjoy the food, the weather and the hiking there, but instead we are having a lovely time at home with family and also new friends.
